Tips & Tricks for Parents

Baby's first Halloween

24 Oct, 2022

Here's some great tips and advice on how to make your baby’s first Halloween spooktacular.

Rule number one is you don’t want to scare your little one - that could end in disaster and a future phobia of all upcoming Halloweens! Here’s some tips on how to make this Halloween fun for everyone.

Costumes - If you’re looking for a safe and comfortable costume for your baby,  look for something with either a zip or buttons that can be easily undone and that allows easy access for nappy changing. Costumes should be short enough to prevent tripping or contact with flames (if possible always look for flame resistant costumes). A good idea is to let your child try on their costume before so you can make adjustments as needed. Avoid using masks as this can limit your child’s eye sight which could lead to falling over.

Trick or treating - Every child likes trick or treating. Make sure a parent (or responsible adult) is always accompanying young children when out at night. Carry a torch with you when out with your baby and if your toddler is old enough, let them carry one as well. If you’re taking a pram or stroller out with you then attach some reflective tape so it can easily be seen in the dark. Glow in the dark wristbands are also a great way to keep an eye on your toddler. If you’re still worried about losing sight of your toddler, buy one of those cords that you can attach to your toddlers wrist. This allows a little freedom for them but you can feel secure that they’re close by. Make sure you stick to well-lit streets and only stop at houses with their lights on and pumpkin out. NEVER enter a house or a vehicle for a treat.

Create a fun, happy theme - You don’t want to completely scare your baby. Rather than a super scary costume like a witch, devil or just copious amounts of blood and guts- create a happy Halloween theme. For example carve happy smiley faces in your pumpkins and choose friendlier costumes such as fairies or princesses. This will make baby’s first Halloween a pleasant experience. They will appreciate the scare factor when they’re older.

A great idea to remember your baby’s first Halloween and the future years is to keep the costumes you use in a dressing up box. As the years go on you can reminisce with your child about their costumes and this will create great lovely memories for everyone.
