Making a Difference Around the World with Slumbersac and B1G1
At Slumbersac, giving back is at the heart of what we do. As proud partners of the global giving initiative B1G1, we’re committed to supporting children and families in need through life-changing charitable projects. Our recent trip to Cambodia, alongside 23 fellow B1G1 supporters from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK, Ireland, and Germany, gave us the opportunity to see the direct impact of these projects and lend a helping hand.
Day 1: Supporting Children’s Education with This Life Cambodia
Education is something we deeply care about at Slumbersac. That’s why we chose to support This Life Cambodia (TLC), a charity empowering children, youth, and communities to build a sustainable future through education.
We visited two schools supporting 477 students, where many families live on just $1 a day. With government funding limited to just $3 per student annually, TLC steps in to help meet essential needs. Many students travel over 15km to school without transport, often leading to dropout. To combat this, we delivered 35 brand-new bicycles, providing these children with the freedom to continue their education.
The joy on their faces as they picked their colourful bikes was unforgettable. This wasn’t TLC’s first project here - they previously helped the community raise $8,000 to build safe, flood-resistant school buildings. It’s amazing what communities can achieve with a little support.
Impact: Access to education for children through bicycle donations.
Day 2: Clean Water & Farming with Trailblazer Foundation and Vocational Training at Sala Baï
The Trailblazer Foundation works deep in Cambodia’s rural villages to provide sustainable solutions like clean water and farming education. We helped build and deliver sand filters, each providing clean drinking water to a family for at least seven years. Trailblazer also teaches communities to grow high-demand vegetables organically, which they can sell to local hotels, boosting their income and self-sufficiency.
Later, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at Sala Baï, a hotel and restaurant training school offering free vocational education to underprivileged Cambodian youth. The programme trains 120 students annually, prioritising girls and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Graduates have a 100% employment rate within three months - an incredible testament to its success.
Impact: 7 years of clean water access for families & vocational training for 3 students.
Day 2 Evening: Empowering Through the Arts with Phare Ponleu Selpak
We also visited Phare Ponleu Selpak, a non-profit using art, theatre, and circus performance to inspire and educate. The talented performers - graduates of the organisation’s training centre - told powerful Cambodian stories through their breathtaking show. It was a moving reminder of how creativity can bring healing and hope.
Impact: 70 hours of performing arts training for young Cambodians.
Day 3: Building a Playground with Child’s Dream
Play is vital to a child's development. That’s why we teamed up with Child’s Dream to build a brand-new playground in a rural primary school. Together with our little helpers, we mixed concrete, assembled swings and slides, and painted bright, fun colours.
The children couldn’t wait to start playing. It was heartwarming to see how something as simple as a playground could bring so much happiness and encourage school attendance.
Impact: Safe, fun play for 5 children through a brand-new playground.
Free to Shine: Preventing Child Trafficking Through Education
One of the most emotional parts of the trip was visiting Free to Shine, a charity working to prevent sex trafficking by helping at-risk girls stay in school. We met with their dedicated social workers, many of whom were once supported by the programme themselves.
We observed how they monitor school attendance, teach literacy, and provide families with tools like seeds to grow their own food. This grassroots, rights-based approach is saving lives by keeping girls in school and out of harm’s way.
Impact: 150 days of tuition for vulnerable girls.
Scholarship Workshop with Child’s Dream
We ended our journey with a visit to Child’s Dream’s scholarship workshop, where students are supported through high school and beyond. These scholarships open the door to further education and opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach.
