What is Tog?
Tog stands for “Thermal Overall Grade” and it is a unit of measurement used to determine the warmth of a sleeping bag. It's a way to help parents choose the appropriate sleeping bag for their baby's needs. The higher the tog rating, the warmer the sleeping bag will be as it will have thicker, insulated padding.
What Tog Rating Should I Use?
The tog rating you choose will depend on a few different factors, including the temperature of your baby's room and the time of year.
Here at Slumbersac, we have 4 Togs for our baby and toddler sleeping bags. These are:
- 0.5 Tog – suited for room temperatures above 24 degrees (no padding)
- 1.0 Tog – suited for room temperatures between 18 to 24 degrees (lightly padded)
- 2.5 Tog – suited for room temperatures between 15 to 21 degrees (standard padding)
- 3.5 Tog – suited for room temperatures below 18 degrees (thick padding)
We have created a Tog Guide which you can view here: Tog Guide
Baby sleeping bags need to comply with the minimum requirements of BS 8510:2009 standard – ‘Child use and care articles. Safety of children’s sleep bags. Safety requirements and test methods.’ This standard describes the tog testing method for baby sleeping bags whose purpose is to ensure that the product prevents babies from overheating during their sleep.
BS 8510 specifies requirements for the safety of sleeping bags for the use of children at least 4kg in weight designed to provide enough warmth so as to remove the need for conventional bedding when sleeping.
At Slumbersac, we send our baby and toddler sleeping bags away for Tog testing to Intertek who approve the weight and safety of each bag, making sure they comply with the safety standards above.
You can, therefore, be sure that a Slumbersac sleeping bag is produced at the highest quality with the correct Tog testing system in place to ensure your little ones get the best sleep they can and give them the best start in life.
In addition to the tog rating, there are a few other factors you should consider when choosing a sleeping bag for your baby. These include:
Size: It's important to choose a sleeping bag that fits your baby properly. A sleeping bag that is too big or too small can be uncomfortable and can even be dangerous.
Material: Look for a sleeping bag made from breathable, lightweight material that is gentle on your baby's skin.
Safety: Make sure the sleeping bag you choose is safe and meets all safety standards. Look for features such as a secure, safe fit and no loose or bulky fabric that could pose a suffocation risk.
Choosing the right sleeping bag for your baby is an important decision. Tog rating is a useful tool to help you determine the appropriate level of warmth for your baby's sleeping bag. By considering factors such as the temperature of your baby's room and the time of year, as well as size, material, and safety, you can choose a sleeping bag that will help your baby sleep comfortably and safely.
