Our cosy, soft and breathable Baby Sleeping Bags in a range of cute designs offer
your baby a safe and healthy sleep

Why a baby sleeping bag is so important

A suitable, well-fitted, baby sleeping bag ensures that your baby can sleep safely and securely at night and during the day. A baby sleeping bag has become a newborn essential in the early years. If you use a duvet or baby blanket, it could become entangled and pulled over the baby's face which can cause overheating. Also, a baby sleeping bag ensures that your baby sleeps in a safe position on their back and is less likely to turn and lie on their front which is considered more risky.

A Slumbersac sleep bag offers just enough freedom of movement and keeps your little one's body temperature constant. This means that your baby doesn't sweat at night, nor do they get cold, no matter what the room temperature or time of year. And you, as parents, can also sleep peacefully. Here's what you should consider when choosing the right baby sleeping bag:

Choose the right tog thickness. How warm should your baby's sleeping bag be?

Our baby sleeping bags are labelled according to the practical English TOG system so you can easily see which Slumbersac is best suited for which season and for which room temperature. Whether you need a light and breathable baby sleeping bag in the Summer, a cosy sleeping bag in the Spring/Autumn transitional period or a cosy and warm Winter sleeping bag with extra padding, Slumbersac baby sleeping bags always offer an ideal sleeping climate for your little one.

What should you wear under a baby sleeping bag?

Usually just one baby body can be worn under a Summer sleeping bag and is enough in the Summer months. It is easy to check that your baby is not too warm - simply check your baby's neck. If they are sweating and damp on the neck, then you should dress your child in lighter clothing.

Usually just pyjamas can be worn under a Winter sleeping bag and is enough in Winter months. It is quite normal for your baby's hands to be cold - it is always best to check the neck.

Here is a more-detailed overview of our different Tog strengths and a guide to what clothes your baby should wear in a baby sleeping bag to help you:

Tog guide

Our baby sleeping bags come in four different togs/weights. The tog or weight of a baby sleeping bag determines how thick it is and therefore how warm it will keep your baby or toddler during the night. The higher the tog rating (weight) the warmer the baby sleeping bag and the lower the tog rating, the cooler the sleeping bag. Please refer to our Tog Guide to decide which Tog is the best choice for you. The decision depends mainly on the temperature of your child's nursery. The Tog weights are obviously also dependent on the room temperature that season so we have categorised these for each time of year: Summer Sleeping Bags, All Year Sleeping Bags and Winter Sleeping Bags.

How to choose the right size sleeping bag for your baby

Slumbersac sleeping bags are available in six different sizes, from newborn up to 10 years old. Our older age sizes from 3-10 years old are in Kids Sleeping Bags. When choosing the right size sleeping bag for your child, it is important to remember that baby sleeping bags are different from buying children's clothes - your child should grow out of the sleeping bag and not grow into it. They should be able to kick and wriggle freely in the sleeping bag, giving enough room for freedom to move and kick when sleeping. Ideally babies feet should be positioned at 3/4 of the sleeping bag, leaving the bottom quarter of the sleeping bag 'empty'. Toddlers often find that they don't like their feet to be restricted and you may find a sleeping bag with feet to be a better solution for them.

It is particularly important to pay attention to the size of the neckline so that your baby cannot slip into the sleeping bag, as would be the case if the neckline were too large, and so that there is no danger of strangulation due to a neckline that is too narrow. There is also a rule of thumb for this - the neckline should be about big enough to fit a finger between the neck and the neckline.

The armholes should also fit the size of the sleeping bag - armholes that are too big cause more heat loss and there is a risk that your baby can slip into the sleeping bag while sleeping.
Up to age 36 months, Slumbersac baby sleeping bags have practical and secure press studs on the armholes to ensure your little one has a safe and secure fit.

When is a baby sleeping bag too big?

Whilst we give approximate ages for our sleeping bags, it is always best to measure your child's height. A simple rule is that, if there is a maximum of 2cm to the next baby sleeping bag size, you should round up. If the difference is more than 2cm then you should round down.

Please refer to our Sleeping Bag Size Guide for further guidance on which baby sleeping bag you should buy, depending on your child's length and weight. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

How many baby sleeping bags should I have?

It is advisable to have two baby sleeping bags for babies. This means that you always have a spare to hand when one needs to be washed.
